Mrs. Kuchar-Long

A message from Mrs. Kuchar-Long:

Welcome to Southmoreland Elementary School.

Our mission at SES is to Bridge the Gap through engagement, communication, and growth for all.

We can bridge the gap at SES by addressing and reducing disparities in engagement, communication, and growth opportunities for all students, regardless of their backgrounds or circumstances. Here's what it might look like in these three areas:

  1. Engagement:

    • Personalized learning: Implementing teaching methods through Universal Design for Learning that centers on individual students' needs, strengths, and interests, fostering higher engagement and motivation.
    • Interactive and experiential activities: Incorporating flexible assessment methods through Universal Design for Learning that centers on various ways for students to demonstrate their learning, such as hands-on projects, group discussions, experiments, field trips, and technology-based tools to make learning more interactive and engaging.
    • Inclusive classrooms: Creating an inclusive environment through Universal Design for Learning that centers on inclusivity where all students feel valued, respected, and encouraged to participate actively in class discussions and activities.
  2. Communication:

    • Effective teacher-student communication: Encouraging open lines of communication between teachers, students, and parents where students feel comfortable asking questions, seeking clarification, and providing feedback.
    • Collaborative learning: Promoting teamwork, peer-to-peer interactions, and group projects that facilitate effective communication and cooperation among students, between students, teachers, and parents.
    • Parent and community involvement: Establishing strong partnerships between schools, parents, and the wider community to facilitate communication and support students' educational journeys.
  3. Growth:

    • Holistic assessment: Moving beyond traditional standardized tests to assess students' progress and growth, considering multiple factors such as critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, and social-emotional development.
    • Individualized support: Identifying students' strengths and weaknesses early on and providing tailored interventions, extra resources, and support systems to help them overcome challenges and maximize their growth potential.
    • Lifelong learning opportunities: Promoting a culture of continuous learning for students and teachers that fosters personal growth beyond the classroom.

Additionally, bridging the gap provides equitable outcomes and opportunities for all.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Tracey M. Kuchar-Long
